An all-encompassing guide answering your JEE Advanced-related questions to help you #PrepareWell.

What is JEE Advanced?

Joint Entrance Examination – Advanced or JEE-Advanced, is an academic examination held annually in India. It is primarily used for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) bachelor's programs. Other universities—such as the Marine Engineering and Research Institute, Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE), the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, and more, use the score obtained on the JEE-Advanced exam as the basis for admission. Non-Indian universities such as University of Cambridge and National University of Singapore also use the JEE-Advanced score for granting admission to Indian students in B.Tech courses. It is a difficult exam and has been consistently ranked as one of the toughest exams in the world. The requirement of identifying and ranking the top 5% of the students forces the examination to be tough.

The reservation percentages of various categories are: 10% for GEN- EWS, 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST and the remaining 40.5% is for UR. Within each of these four categories, 5% horizontal reservation is available for PwD (including dyslexic) candidates.

To be eligible for JEE Advanced, aspirants should rank within the top 2,50,000 (in all categories) in JEE Main.

JEE-Advanced Exam Structure

JEE-Advanced consists of 2 papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2), and candidates must appear for both papers. It is conducted in an online mode as CBT – Computer Based Test. The exam has a unique marking concept with full, partial, zero and negative marks.

Each paper will have 3 sections: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and every section will have 18 questions. The duration of each paper is 3 hours and is conducted in two languages - Hindi and English.
